Shropshire Getaways

So you’ve joined us, Des and Jill, in our rural idyll in Shropshire.

You might want to completely relax in your accommodation, watching the river meander slowly on its way down to Bristol.

See the sapphire blue blur of a kingfisher or the sunshine dapple the water and feel that stress simply melt away!

There is a saying: “There’s always time for one more cast,” and this will be familiar to fans of river fishing!

Yet our delightful area has lots to offer in terms of things to do if you want to explore this lovely part of Shropshire, and have a change of scene.

Bridgnorth is our one of our nearest towns and is divided into two delightful parts – Low Town and High Town – by the majestic River Severn. This picturesque place derives its name from a historic bridge and features the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, a remarkable funicular railway, and the oldest and deepest inland electric cliff railway in the country. At least it saves tackling that steep climb on foot!

Bridgnorth Railway transports passengers up and down an impressive 111ft sandstone cliff separating the town’s two halves.

Operated by counterbalances and steel ropes, this amazing attraction is fascinating to watch and is fun to ride in.

Have a look at Bridgnorth Town Hall, which dates from 1650, and once the site of the public wool market, historically one of the area’s most important historic trades.

And you don’t have to travel to Italy to see a leaning tower! Bridgnorth Castle, founded in 1101, includes the remains of an impressive stone tower that leans at an angle of 15 degrees (which is four times the lean of the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa).

Nearby you’ll find Bridgnorth Gardens, including the Grade II Listed War Memorial with the bronze figure of a soldier of the Shropshire Light Infantry.

The town also has a 1930s cinema and Northgate Museum, holding a fascinating array of local artefacts and exhibits.

After all this exploring, you’ll be ready for a nice meal and a drink and there are lots to places to choose from in the town.

Of course, we’d love you to simply enjoy your surroundings at Shropshire getaways, whether you stay in our lovely cottage, lodge, glamping pod or bring your own comfy tourer. In the words of American writer Henry David Thoreau: “Everyone should believe in something; I believe I’ll go fishing.” You can enjoy the best of both worlds with us as we are blessed with a beautiful location in this timeless and hidden part of Shropshire.
